Gee-Gees Take ‘Wolves in Three Sets

Hugh Mullally | Volleyball (W)

The women’s volleyball team completed a three game road trip on Sunday with a 3-0 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees (17-25, 17-25. 23-25).

“This afternoon’s match was a strong physical match with both teams taking swings at each other,” said coach Chris Green.

Ottawa had a fresher group, which was obvious with the velocity of their attacks. Lakehead was just a bit behind on the power side of the game. In the end they finished with 8 fewer kills fewer and a dozen too many errors.

Jennifer Casey 15-16The ‘Wolves struggled to get going in the first two sets, and were leading 15-12 in the third set, but were unable to extend the match any further.

“We had a very solid game plan in place, which is no easy task to formulate against Ottawa. They attack you from all positions as hard as anyone,” Green added.

Vanessa Masters made 21 assists with 2 kills and 7 digs on the game.

“We executed on 50% of that plan and we have to learn from that. When we executed more we had a great chance to win the 3rd set, however 2-3 breakdowns in system at a crucial  time was our undoing.”

Kaly Soro had a game-high 18 points for the Gee-Gees.

Jen Casey and Kailan Robinson were Lakehead’s leaders with 9 and 8 points, respectively. Libero Alyssa Genereux made 8 digs.

Coach Green concluded, “For the third game in a weekend, our staff is proud of the girls preparation and fight, and we know they have gained a lot of valuable experience to make the exam break rewarding, and look with optimism to the 2nd half of the season.”
