‘Wolves Swept by Mustangs

Hugh Mullally | Volleyball (W)

The second time around against the Western Mustangs was no sweeter for the women’s volleyball team, who lost in straight sets, 15-25, 14-25, and 23-25.

A_genereux_pass“After last night’s game, Western’s leaders ramped it up to another level and we couldn’t match it. They found that extra gear and they found it fast,” said coach Chris Green post game. “That’s the sign of a good team, a team with experience and leaders.”

From the outset, it did seem like Western was much more comfortable in their play, easily taking the first set 25-15, followed by a 25-14 cruise in the second set.

After the ‘Wolves limited Mustang Kelsey Veltman on Friday, she was nearly unstoppable Saturday, racking up 11 kills on 15 swings. She also had a service ace and 2 blocks.

For Lakehead, Kailan Robinson bounced back after a few lack lustre performances to make 11 kills along with 9 digs and a block. Leah Mousseau was next with 8 kills and 11 digs.

The third set was a much better one for Lakehead, up 22-19 after making some great plays to get the advantage late. Western responded with a 6-1 run that ended the game instead.

The women’s team’s next games are Feb 5, 6, 7 in southern Ontario.
