Lancers Too Much For ‘Wolves

Hugh Mullally | Volleyball (W)

Saturday afternoon brought a 3-0 loss to the women’s volleyball team, at the hands of the Windsor Lancers (16-25, 21-25, 18-25).Boxscore

Masters_to_CaseyThe common storyline of unsustained team effort was once again presented, as some Thundewolves played great while others struggled to find their rhythm.

For their part, graduating 5th year veterans Vanessa Masters and Jen Casey put forth solid efforts in their second-last games as Thunderwolves.

Masters had 25 assists on the day, along with 5 digs, 3 kills and a service ace.

“We did a lot of things well today, it was just a few runs that we let them have,” said Masters post game. “We have to get our passing together at the beginning and eliminate their runs and that should help us a lot tomorrow.”

Casey was the ‘Wolves kill leader on Saturday with 7 and had a great second set, in which Lakehead was down 16-6 and pushed back against the Lancers. Down 24-16, the ‘Wolves rolled off five straight points but would concede the set despite their best efforts later in the frame.

Lakehead found themselves behind most of the day, enjoying brief early leads in sets 1 and 2, and leading 9-8 in set 3. The rest of the game belonged the the Lancers, behind 11 kills on 16 swings from Shannon Dean.

Coach Chris Green:

MAsters_serve“A lot of the time we did exactly what we supposed to do in one phase of our game, but the next line of people responsible didn’t do their jobs, that’s the part that’s frustrating. Hopefully we can find that 100% effort from everyone tomorrow.”

Vanessa Masters is hopeful her team can end the season, and help her end her and Jen Casey’s university careers on a positive note, adding, “It’s my last game and I just have to play as well as I can and have no regrets at the end of the day. Hopefully I go outta’ here on a positive note, and a win would be a great way to finish.”

The women’s volleyball team will complete their season tomorrow at 12 noon, with pre-game tributes to Masters and Casey.
