Horner, Dayler and Waltner to Wrestle at CIS

| News, Wrestling

Lakehead wrestling will have three athletes at the CIS tournament this weekend in St Catharines, hosted by the Brock Badgers.

The Thunderwolves will be represented by Emma Horner (59kg, above right) and Kelsey Dayler (67kg, above centre) on the women’s side, while Chris Waltner (57kg, above left) is the lone representative from the men’s team.

Dana Campbell (82kg, Thunder Bay) also qualified for the CIS tournament by wrestling through an injured hand at the OUA’s to a bronze medal. It was decided last week that her hand was getting worse since OUA’s so the rookie was forced to pull out of the CIS tournament rather than risk further injury.

All three Thunderwolves scheduled to do battle on the mat this weekend have been there before. Horner has two CIS silver medals to her credit (’14,’15), while Kelsey Dayler has been to the national tournament three times, claiming a bronze medal in 2014.

Chris Waltner is hoping to make the podium after two previous trips to the CIS, finishing 4th in 2014 and 5th last season.

“We’d like to have all three in the medal rounds, to be competitive all the way through,” says coach Francis Clayton. “It’s been a hard training year, we’ve done well. We’re ready to go.”
