Lakehead Cross-Country Begins Season with a Bang!

| Cross Country, News

This past weekend, the Lakehead University Cross-Country team competed in the Vigars & Salter Western Invitational in London, Ontario.

Filled with top USports teams, the Wolves earned a tie for 5th place amongst the OUA competition, and improved dramatically on their position from the previous season.

Almost the entire team improved their 8km personal best times on the Thames Valley Golf Course route. Led by veteran Thundewolf, Connor MacIntosh, the men’s team finished with 235 Points (MacIntosh – 23rd, Dobson – 47th, McDonough – 48th, Buxton – 49th & Lehman 68th).

“This was a very deep field — we knew coming into this weekend that the competition would be elite; seeing as this is the OUA Championship course” said Coach McDonough. “I think this was a showcase of USport caliber teams, and we stepped up to the plate and our guys wanted to prove that they are ready to qualify for USports this year,” Coach McDonough continued.

The top scorers for the Thunderwolves were:

1) Connor MacIntosh – 26:08 PERSONAL BEST

2) Jett Dobson – 27:06 PERSONAL BEST

3) Will McDonough – 27:08

4) Leif Buxton – 27:09 PERSONAL BEST

5) Andrew Lehman – 28:21

6) Aiden Webster – 28:41 PERSONAL BEST

7) Nicholas Lightwood – 29:29 PERSONAL BEST

8) Colin Warwick – 29:52

Although the Thunderwolves men finished T5 in OUA competition, perhaps more notable was their 9th place finish within the entire USports division.

“I’d also like to thank our Assistant Coach David DePiero — he’s been a great addition to the group and has helped prepare the team this year; we’re grateful to have him onboard to help propel the team to new heights!” added Coach McDonough.

Next up for the Lakehead University Cross-Country team will be the Bayfront Invitational in Hamilton, October 14th where the team will look to continue their training and improve upon their 8km times.
