Lakehead wrestlers take 8-5 win in meet with Algoma

| Wrestling

The Lakehead University wrestling team hosted a meet against Algoma this past weekend, winning eight matches to Algoma’s five. The Thunderwolves began the meet with three straight wins before Algoma managed to put two wins together. Lakehead also managed to put another four-win streak together during the meet. “In general we wrestled well,” Lakehead head coach Francis Clayton said. “This event is a good evaluation, it is somewhat of a midterm for our program. It is a chance to evaluate what we have been doing in practice to see if what we are teaching is working.”

The Algoma Thunderbirds are coached by former Lakehead wrestler Trevor Manchester. “It’s always fun coaching against Trevor,” Clayton said. “Trevor’s teams are getting better every season, they have a number of very good wrestlers that we need to pay attention to. His wrestlers are always well prepared and in good shape.”

Match-by-match results were as follows:

Maggie MacGillivray (LU) win 10-0 over Willow Morton (Algoma)
Elinam Afidenyo (LU) win by fall over Rebekah Gwynn (Algoma)
Marco Palermo (LU) win by 10-0 over Owen Gaffney (Algoma)
Brody Collison (Algoma) win by fall over Hasan Ercan (LU)
Bryce Davis (Algoma) win 10-0 over Brody Evans (LU)
Steven Powell-Chambers (LU) win 11-0 over Graham Slater (Algoma)
Jessie Leach (LU) win 10 – 0 over David Serra (Algoma)
John Campbell (LU) win 10-0 over Miisheen Shawanda (Algoma)
Myles Belgrade (LU) win 6 – 6 (on criteria) over Jordan Campioni (Algoma)
Brody Collison (Algoma) win 10-0 over Sam Lockie (LU)
Riley Tubaro (Algoma) win by fall over Elinam Afidenyo (LU)
Maggie MacGillivray (LU) win 10 – 0 Skylar Perron (Algoma)

“This was a good event to start the season with,” Clayton said. “It is like what coach John Wooden said: ‘you haven’t taught until they have learned.’ Our goal is to have our wrestlers learn and perform at their best. I believe we are on the right track.”

Lakehead’s wrestlers will next see action at the Ontario Junior Championships and Western Open in late January.
