The women’s volleyball team has announced their second player commitment of the off-season, 5’10 Rachel Sweezey of Ottawa, Ontario.
A multi-dimensional athlete with tremendous upside, Sweezey hails from the nationally accredited Mavericks Volleyball Club, coached by Judi Mousseau, who has produced elite volleyball players for years.
“Coach Mousseau is doing great work with Rachel and I trust recommendations from coaches like Judi,” says Lakehead coach Chris Green. “Rachel’s a complete, well-rounded athlete with an upside in our gym. She’s got strength and athleticism, and athletes like her make a difference here because we work in stride with them to achieve their goals and those of our program. Combine that with her work ethic and this is a win-win for us.”
Rachel is an athletic middle attacker with the skillset to play other positions as well, should the team require it of her. This gives Lakehead another strong athlete with a multiple position options.
Rachel, whose academic interests lie in the Environmental Management program comments, “It was great visiting Lakehead back in February. I really liked it because it’s a smaller university and the campus is very nice as well – even under a foot of snow! I enjoyed speaking with professor Brian McLaren, touring all the buildings and seeing the classes. Meeting and practicing with the team and coaching staff was a pleasure as well. Everyone was so welcoming and I am definitely looking forward to being a part of this tight-knit family. I know it will be a very good fit and I’m very excited to be joining the Thunderwolves next year.”
Sweezey’s club coach Judi Mousseau adds, “Rachel is a dedicated and hard-working athlete that will continue to learn and mature in her time at Lakehead University. She’s devoted to her teammates and coaches to always bring her best to every practice and game. She has been a great asset to our U18 Maverick Shotgun team as a starting middle. I believe her best is yet to come, as there is a great deal of potential with Rachel. The Lakehead Women’s Volleyball program will only benefit in the upcoming years with Rachel on their squad.”
