| News, Wrestling

Lakehead’s men’s and women’s varsity wrestling teams competed at the Brock Open this past weekend, placing second among varsity squads in combined team score. The women scored 14 points, and the men finished with 18, for a combined 32 points for Lakehead.

“Our team members have been working hard at creating scoring chances and converting these chances into match points,” Thunderwolves coach Francis Clayton said.

Lakehead finished behind host Brock, and ahead of Concordia and Guelph.

Madison Clayton and Megan Smith both take home silver-medal finishes in the female 63 and 48 weight classes, respectively. They scored 7 points each.

On the men’s side, Marco Palermo finished 3rd in the 61 weight class, Myles Bellegrade finished third in 120, and Hasan Ercan finished 3rd in 54. The wrestlers scored 5, 4, and 4 points, respectively. Additionally, Sam Lockie picked up a fourth-place finish, and Alex Richer and John Campbell finished fifth and sixth in their classes.

“We have shown consistency in our results over this season,” coach Clayton said, “but, we do need to start scoring more points against the top-ranked OUA and USPORTS wrestlers.”
