Volleyball Team to Visit Guelph, Ottawa

| News, Volleyball (W)

The women’s volleyball team (3-4) continue their regular season this weekend on the road with two games versus Guelph (Thurs-Fri) followed by a game against Ottawa (Sunday).

“We take to the road for another three-game weekend, and had a solid week of training in some of the areas that hurt us previously,” says coach Chris Green. “We seek improvement in our ability to focus and refocus to execute our game plan without being affected by the ebbs and flows on the court.”

The Guelph Gryphons (4-4, 4th place OUA West) sit just ahead of Lakehead in the standings, making this doubleheader a critical matchup. The Gryphons lead the OUA in both digs and total attacks. They enter the weekend coming off a 3-1 loss to the Queen’s Gaels and a 3-0 win over the RMC Paladins.

Green adds, “Guelph is always a tough opponent in their home gym. Maddie Dedecker again leads the way for Guelph along with a perennial OUA All Star Libero [Kristen Almhjell] who sweeps the floor of any attacks hit her way.”

The Ottawa Gee-Gees (5-4) are a tough serving team, with 69 service aces thus far (OUA #2), but are also the league leaders in service errors (80).

Green explains, “Ottawa poses a different challenge, they can attack from every position. Theirs is another gym that has not treated us well. We’ll try to tame the Gee Gees with a consistent defensive system and an aggressive transition game. Ottawa will also test your serve receive with one of the toughest serving line-ups in OUA.”

“We need to find consistency on offence and find some offensive depth. We can’t continue with one player having a big game while the others wait their turn, we need a solid performance from everyone.”

Sunday’s game against Ottawa will be webcast via OUA TV

No webcast is currently scheduled for the Guelph games. Check OUA TV closer to game time for possible listings.
