The Lakehead women’s volleyball team (1-9) is back in action this weekend as they take on the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at home in the Thunderdome on Saturday afternoon.
“First game of 2017 is the way all teams want to kick off the New Year and has the reigning champions in the OUA bring their style of play to us. Toronto knows how to win, I am sure no one has won as many games in the past couple of years during the regular season and into the playoffs. They have one of the absolute best coaches in Canada, a veteran player and coach, Kristine Drakitch, who has her team on cruise control. We need to work to force her to change the speed bit.” – Coach Green
Toronto (7-0) is the defending National Champions and is standing up to be one of the top teams again this year. They are currently ranked first in the OUA East and second in the U Sports top 10.
Varsity Blue and Team Canada National team member, Alina Dormann has one of the highest number of kills in the league this year and is leading the OUA with 4.8 kills per set with the highest hitting percentage. Setter Madelyn Mandryk also leads the league with the highest number of assists per set of 9.9.
“On our side we have to work off the positive weeks of work post exam and holiday break. The athletes have been working hard and we have to really serve tough here at home. Jen Hammerton will have her hands full in running the offence against a very strong defending team both at the net and behind the 3m line.”
“In the first half of the season we knew what the problem was, and the girls are focused on making that change going into the second half. Either way Fans will be treated to a strong visitor and with continued prep and hard work, an entertaining match.”
