Zimak Places 3rd in Historic ‘Around the Bay 30k’ Road Race

| Cross Country, News

Lakehead Cross Country Runner Trevor Zimak, of Thunder Bay, placed 3rd at the Around the Bay 30k Road Race in Hamilton on Sunday.  The race is the oldest road race in North America (established in 1894) and one of the biggest in Canada with over 5,000 athletes competing.

Zimak_AroundtheBayConditions on race day were tough with cold temperatures and strong winds making for slower that usual times across the board.

Trevor ran a strong and patient race starting conservatively and picking runners off as the race progressed.  He was 10th at 10km and didn’t move into 3rd place until the race’s last two kilometers.  He ran the fastest final 10km of any athlete in the race, with a total time of 1:40.06, less than five minutes behind the winner, Paul Kimugul who finished in 1:35.16.

Zimak was 17th in the 2015 edition of this race.  His next race is the Thunder Bay 10 mile road race on May 23rd.
