‘Wolves Volleyball Visit Three Top 10’s

| Volleyball (W)

This weekend offers a rare chance for Lakehead’s volleyball team to face three of the biggest and strongest teams the CIS has to offer: McMaster (#7), Ryerson (#10) and Toronto (#3), Friday through Sunday. Schedule follows below.

Friday night McMaster hosts Lakehead with a team that is laden with veteran size and strength. Lakehead looks to rebuff McMaster’s leading hitters, Joanna Jedzrejewska and Lauren Mastroluisi. Setter Caitlan Genovy has developed an offence that is efficient with big middles and a strong rightside.

Lakehead needs to bring their best serve and defend game, the challenge is a welcome one for coach Chris Green.

On Saturday Ryerson presents brings another team of depth and experience at all positions, led by attackers Veronica Livingston and Emily Nicolishen. Setter Emily Betteridge is an assist leader in the OUA and has plenty of hitters to dish to.

“This game will test our offence, we have to push the ball past a tall and athletic team at the net with solid defence behind that,” mention coach Chris Green.

Finally on Sunday, Toronto presents an undefeated team that is consistent, smooth and experienced. The Varsity Blues play a simple straight forward, no errors game with power down all avenues on the court.

“They systematically block and defend very well,” notes Green. “We will have to serve as tough as we have all year to penetrate that wall of offence. The only way to affect Toronto is to disrupt their offence and force them into options B and C, which are still potent. We have to control what they intend to run and make them have to run something else.”

Green concludes, “All in all we are looking forward to the challenge set before us.”
