Volleyball team loses first game of 2019 in straight sets

| News, Volleyball (W)

Lakehead’s women’s volleyball team lost their first match of 2019 tonight, dropping three straight sets to the Brock Badgers. The set scores were 25-9, 25-14, and 25-15.

“We played a very good team in Brock tonight,” Thunderwolves head coach Craig Barclay said. “We had a lot of players make their OUA debut tonight,” Barclay said, “and in playing a young lineup we gained a lot of valuable experience.”

The Thunderwolves saw 11 different players hit the floor on Friday night, for a total of 27 sets played across the squad.

“We will look to build off what they learned,” Barclay said.

Lakehead was led by Rheanna Geisel’s 14 points on the night, including 13 kills and two block assists.

The Thunderwolves were ultimately undone by their combined 27 errors, including 20 hitting errors.

Lakehead drops to 1-7, but has two more chances to pick up wins with games coming on Saturday and Sunday against the Windsor Lancers.

“We’re looking forward to getting back on the court tomorrow to face another good team in Windsor,” Barclay said, “and to learn from our mistakes tonight.”

Both Saturday and Sunday’s games against the Lancers are scheduled to tip at 1pm. Windsor currently sits at 4-7.

“It will take a full team effort to be successful,” Barclay said, “and we have to have the right people contributing at different times.”
