‘Wolves Go 1-4 at Quebec-Ontario Challenge

| Volleyball (W)

The women’s volleyball team went 1-4 over the weekend at the Quebec-Ontario Challenge, hosted by the U of Montreal Carabins.

In their first match on Friday, Lakehead was defeated 3-0 by the host team (25-17, 25-10, 25-12). The Carabins presented a powerful lineup against a younger Thunderwolves’ squad, who had some struggles on serve reception.

“A tough environment to begin the weekend, but a great team to play against,” said Lakehead coach Chris Green. “After the game we had a good discussion about playing together as a team.”

In their next game Friday, against the Sherbrooke Ver et Or, Lakehead put up a good fight before falling in straight sets, 25-11, 25-23, 26-24.

Coach Green commented, “After a rough start losing 25-11, the girls settled into a rhythm and hit a strong stride. Although losing 25-23 and 26-24, we had swings in which to win, and we seemed a lot more cohesive on the floor.”

Sara Potter and Leah Mousseau led the way against Sherbrooke, scoring 10 points each, followed by Kailan Robinson who scored 8 and Olivia Bowman with 5 points.

Over the two matches on Friday Leah Mousseau tallied 17 digs and Olivia Bowman had 13. The defense at the net was diverse, with four Thunderwolves collecting stuff blocks. Vanessa Masters, Kailan Robinson, Rheanna Geisel and Jessica Korchak all made blocks.

Geisel, who was an OUA-All rookie in 2014-15, was strong at the service line, as was Mousseau, each player scoring 2 aces and keeping defenders on their heels.

In their Saturday games, the ‘Wolves were defeated 3-0 by UQAM (25-15, 25-21, 25-12), and 3-0 by the McGill Martlets (25-23, 25-20, 25-19).

Lakehead would find redemption in their final game of the weekend on Sunday, prevailing 3-1 over the Western Mustangs (25-21, 19-25, 25-14, 25-20).
