Running Teams Take on the Griak in Twin Cities
Lakehead’s cross country running teams will be in Minneapolis this weekend, competing at the annual Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday morning.
“As always the Griak will be a great early season test to see how we stack up at this point of the season against some excellent competition,” says coach Kip Sigsworth.
Lakehead’s Kevin Tree hopes to improve on his fourth-place finish from last year, and his coach doesn’t see any reason why not. As a team, the Lakehead men have placed in the top 5 the past two years and looking to improve upon it.
“Kevin’s in great shape right now. Dylan Brown has had a bit of a virus the last week and will not be at full strength, if he runs, so our back end will have to step up.” – Coach Sigsworth
The women’s team will look to veteran Callie Roelfsema to lead the way along with third year Natasha Frank, and they’ll also have the benefit of dual athletes Megan Smith (wrestling) and Bryanna van Leeuwen (nordic skiing) who have joined the cross country roster this season. Marla Keyes is local runner who has returned to Thunder Bay to suit up for the ‘Wolves after two years at Florida Atlantic University.
“The women are young and will be without Kayla Gallo but are still much improved over last season. Callie and Marla should lead the team up front.” – Coach Sigsworth
