In Saturday’s 3-1 win over the RMC Paladins, the women’s volleyball team got the push they needed from rookies Catherine Klassen and Leah Mousseau. Set scores were 25-18, 25-20, 22-25, 27-25.
From the outset it seemed like Lakehead would handle RMC easily, opening up a 12-3 lead in the opening frame. The Paladins then went on a 9-3 run to bring the ‘Wolves back to reality.
Leah Mousseau (technically a sophomore but playing her first competitive regular season) was another steady force for Lakehead put together another solid outing, making 18 kills on Saturday on a whopping 54 attempts. Setter Vanessa Masters worked with much better passing than on Friday, which was critical to her making 41 assists in Saturday’s win.
Sara Potter came into the game on the left side, relieving starter Kailan Robinson who struggled to find her rhythm early on. Neither of them finished with great stats; they combined for 6 kills and 9 errors.
Lakehead libero Alyssa Genereux had another impressive performance on Saturday, this time making 29 digs against the relentless Paladins.
Green summarized the conclusion of the game, saying, “That fourth set, the final 8 points or so, our girls really performed, and that was a positive sign. They didn’t do that in the 3rd set and let RMC back into the game, but that final set was a definitely a good sign for our team.”
