In what was without a doubt the most exciting match of the year, the women’s volleyball team pushed the Western Mustangs to the limit, and then pushed a little more, but fell short in five sets, losing 3-2 (14-25, 25-20, 22-25, 30-28, 13-15).
“Our line-up is young, and we made some silly mistakes late that young players are going to make,” said Chris Green post game. “We studied Western’s game, we clipped the video and knew what they were going to do, and we still didn’t defend them the way we thought we would, especially early on.”
The first set was a forgettable one for the ‘Wolves, who looked flat, losing 25-14.

Mustang Kelsey Veltman (photo right) came as-advertised in the early stages, and it took Lakehead some time before they could make adjustments to slow down the sophomore with a cannon of an attack. In the end Lakehead limited the second-best hitter in the OUA to .324 efficiency, a respectable job on Veltman, who came into the match with a .423 success rate on the attack. Nonetheless, Veltman had 17 kills to lead all players. The ‘Wolves almost took he 3rd set, keeping it close, the set being tied at 21 until the Mustangs closed it out.
Mousseau finished with 15 kills on 47 attempts with 18 digs and a service ace. Klassen had three aces and 7 kills along with 3 blocks.
“It really came down to serving, you can’t miss that many serves and expect to win,” commented Green.
The two teams will rematch tomorrow at 7pm.
