T-Wolves Edged by Mustangs, 3-2

Hugh Mullally | Volleyball (W)

In what was without a doubt the most exciting match of the year, the women’s volleyball team pushed the Western Mustangs to the limit, and then pushed a little more, but fell short in five sets, losing 3-2 (14-25, 25-20, 22-25, 30-28, 13-15).

“Our line-up is young, and we made some silly mistakes late that young players are going to make,” said Chris Green post game. “We studied Western’s game, we clipped the video and knew what they were going to do, and we still didn’t defend them the way we thought we would, especially early on.”

The first set was a forgettable one for the ‘Wolves, who looked flat, losing 25-14.

In the end Lakehead limited the second-best hitter in the OUA to .324 efficiency, a respectable job on Veltman, who came into the match with a .423 success rate on the attack. Nonetheless, Veltman had 17 kills to lead all players.
Lakehead bounced back in the second set, battling Western to a 19-19 tie, before the home side rolled off a 6-1 run to close out the set and tie the game.

The ‘Wolves almost took he 3rd set, keeping it close, the set being tied at 21 until the Mustangs closed it out.

The fourth set was the real heart-stopper, going into extra points, and had several plays reviewed between the referee and linesman on game point that went Lakehead’s way to extend the set. Catherine Klassen and Leah Mousseau (photo left) were the steady attackers for Lakehead, and Sara Potter came off the bench and did great work, making 8 kills with 14 digs on the game.

Mousseau finished with 15 kills on 47 attempts with 18 digs and a service ace. Klassen had three aces and 7 kills along with 3 blocks.

One major factor in the game was serving, with Lakehead committing 15 errors while the Mustangs missed 21 serves. Four of LU’s missed serves came in the fifth set.

“It really came down to serving, you can’t miss that many serves and expect to win,” commented Green.

Vanessa Masters made 33 assists for the ‘Wolves offense (libero Alyssa Genereux had 5 helpers and a massive 27 digs), while Western setter Katherine Tsiofas made 49 assists for the winning side.
Lakehead was ahead 8-7 when the teams switched sides in set 5, and again 10-9, but the service errors caught up with them late and Western capitalized to close out the pesky ‘Wolves.

The two teams will rematch tomorrow at 7pm.
