Lakehead’s nordic skiers had a chance to get tuned up for the competitive season this past weekend at the World Jr/U23 Trials, held at Lappe Nordic Ski Centre.
Two Thunderwolves were among those selected to the Canadian team: Sadie White (photo below), of Thunder Bay, in the women’s junior division, and Scott Hill (photo above), from Toronto, in the men’s senior division.
“It was a weekend of mixed results,” said coach Leif Lennie. “Some of our skiers are hurt right now or getting over illness, and others have had just a few weeks of snow to train on. All of the athletes who came from Quebec and out west have had two or three months of snow already.”
After 1.3km sprints on Thursday and the Classic style races on Friday, the weekend of events was cut short, due to frigid temperatures on Sunday, with skiers not permitted to compete in weather below -20 degrees Celsius. The temperature at Lappe never rose much above -24 on Sunday, which meant the cancellation of the ‘skiathlon’ event, which is a 20-30km race, depending on division.
