Lakehead University’s varsity wrestling program, along with the Lakehead Wrestling Club have partnered with Ontario Amateur Wrestling Association (OAWA) to become one of four Regional Development Centres in the province. This program, in a decision supported by Wrestling Canada, will follow the Ontario High Performance (OHP) model, with other centres established in Windsor, Kingston and Sudbury.
“This is a great opportunity for wrestling here in Northwestern Ontario and across the province,” says Lakehead coach Francis Clayton. “Ontario Wrestling is doing a good job fostering the sport in all regions. Becoming one of the Development Centres is a result of the hard work our coaches and athletes have put in over the past two to three decades.”
In addition to official status, Lakehead Wrestling was also presented with a brand new wrestling mat, valued at over $10,000. Program details are outlined below.
