Tree Places 8th in 5,000m Olympic Trials

| News, Track & Field

Kevin Tree completed the summer outdoor track season at the Olympic Trials in Edmonton over the weekend, where he placed 8th overall in a time of 14:16 in the 5,000m event. While the time wasn’t good enough to make the Canadian team headed for Rio, he did improve upon his pre-race ranking of 13th.

tree_olympic_trialAs explained by coach Kip Sigsworth, the pace was relaxed to begin with. Tree took the lead with four laps to go in attempt to string out the field. With two laps remaining, the eventual winner, Mo Amed, passed Tree and blasted the final 800 meters to the finish line.

“Not quite the result we were looking for today but still a very strong race,” Sigsworth elaborated. “This was a very strong field with three athletes who have already achieved the Olympic standard, and to be 8th proves that Tree belongs at this level. He’s had a great season.”

For his part, Kevin was satisfied with the race, saying “I thought the race went fairly well, I was still in it with 800 to go, due to the slow pace up to that point. When the move was made with two laps to go, I just didn’t have the wheels to go with. To hang in there for 8th, it was a good way to finish off the season.”
