CIS Preview: Tree Leads Lakehead Runners to Guelph
The men’s cross country running team travels to Guelph this weekend to take part in the CIS Championship race, hosted by Guelph University on Saturday.
The 10 km race may well see a new championship team crowned, as it is expected that Guelph, whose program has captured both the women’s and men’s CIS banner for a remarkable 9 consecutive years, will face an unprecedented challenge from the field of CIS competitors.
As for Lakehead, they will try and match their program-best mark of 6th place, achieved last year in Newfoundland.
“CIS is always a super competitive and exciting meet and I expect this year to be no exception,” says coach Kip Sigsworth.
Lakehead’s team will consists of Dominique Aulagnon, Kevin Tree, Kenny Groop, Tyler White, Mason Quarrell, Trevor Zimak and Gavin Shields.Fifth year veteran Aulagnon (photo left) hopes to make the most of his final cross country race as a Thunderwolf. In last year’s CIS race, he placed a respectable 37th after getting spiked early in the race and finishing despite a bloody and broken foot.
As Sigsworth notes, the best of the season could be yet to come for his group of trail running Thunderwolves.
“Overall I feel our men’s team has underachieved thus far this season; we have had some excellent races from each team member but we have yet to see the best out of each guy on the same day. Obviously that is the goal on Saturday. If we put it together we will surprise some teams. Individually Tree should be in the mix at the front, it will be an exciting day.”
Kevin Tree captured the program’s first medal in 15 years at the OUA race two weeks ago, and hopes to be on the podium on Saturday, as he explained in an interview last week.
“You gotta believe that anything can happen if you stay positive throughout the training and the race,” said Tree. “If we keep working hard, we’ll get our chance to break through.”
