Men’s Hoops Fall Flat vs Brock

Hugh Mullally | Basketball (M)

There wasn’t enough left in the tank for the Thunderwolves in their second game in as many nights, as the Badgers cruised to an 84-51 win Saturday evening before an announced crowd of 2,887 at the Meridian Centre.

Nick Burke opened with a three pointer, but that would be Lakehead’s only lead of the game. Brock came back with a three of their own, and a few moment later the game was tied 7-7. Brock then went on a 14-0 run to end the first quarter.

The ‘Wolves could only muster another 7 points in the second quarter and faced a dismal 40-14 deficit at the half.

The second half was more or less a formality, and although Lakehead showed much more life offensively, they couldn’t cut into the Brock lead.

Trailing 59-29 after 30 minutes, Lakehead’s bench was given a chance to get some playing time. Despite this, Brock’s starters were put on the floor to begin the fourth quarter, much to the chagrin of Lakehead coach Manny Furtado. Brock all-star Dani Elgadi finally left the game with 4 minutes remaining, having scored 14 points with 14 rebounds.

Lakehead was led by Bacarius Dinkins with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Henry Tan struggled from the field, going 2-for-15, but did make 7 free throws to finish with 11 points and 9 rebounds.

Alex Robichaud, who entered the game with a shiner below his left eye from Friday’s bout, sustained a 4cm cut over the same eye in the first half after colliding with a Badger. After receiving attention from Brock’s talented medical staff, Robichaud re-entered the game.

Coach Manny Furtado:

“Our guys never quit tonight and gave it everything they had this weekend. We’ve got a good measure of what the best teams in the country are like now. We need to improve over the coming weeks and get prepared for the 2nd half of the season.”

Lakehead continues play in late December at the Wesmen Classic in Winnipeg.
