T-Wolves Drop Cardinals, 86-68

Hugh Mullally | Basketball (M)

Lakehead basketball fans got to see their entire team play on Friday evening, as the men’s team were victorious over the visiting Hibbing Cardinals, 86-68.

After Hibbing scored the first basket of the game, Lakehead’s starters would respond and then some, going on a 14-0 run and stretching the lead to 32-12 at the end of the first quarter.

For the final three quarters, Lakehead’s bench was given the task by coach Manny Furtado to deliver a win against a hard-nosed group of Americans. For the most part, Lakehead’s second unit kept the visitors in check and at the same time got some valuable reps in their offensive and defensive sets.

Rookie Mike Theodore of Ottawa, Ontario, was Lakehead’s leading scorer with 16 points, most of them coming from hustle plays on the glass and a soft touch around the basket. He also grabbed 6 rebounds in 21 minutes of play.

Local rookie Nick Soulias logged 13 minutes of court time, scoring 4 points with 2 assists and 2 rebounds.

It was the first glimpse of Brandon Persad that Thunderdome fans got, as he showed off his range, hitting three 3-pointers, for a total 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

For the Cardinals, Brandon Emery had 21 points while Elliott Johnson scored 20. Mohamoud Abdillahi grabbed 10 rebounds.

The two teams will rematch Saturday afternoon at 2pm in the Thunderdome.
