Lakehead wrestlers took to the mat on Saturday at the OUA championships in Sault Ste Marie, earning four medals and in turn four berths at the CIS tournament. Full results and team standings follow below.
At their face, the day’s results were consistent with coach Francis Clayton’s expectations going into the tournament. Clayton was aiming to have all his wrestlers battle for a medal, and of the 12 Thunderwolves in attendance, nine made it to the medal rounds. Five settled for fourth place, while four made it to the podium.
Emma Horner (59kg) was the top performing Thunderwolf, making it to the gold medal match before being defeated 3-1 and finishing with a silver medal to her credit. Her opponent from Brock is ranked #1 in CIS.
Kelsey Dayler (67kg) and Dana Campbell (82kg, photo left) both won bronze in their divisions for the Thunderwolves’ women’s team, and Heather Brousseau placed 4th in the 72kg.
The men’s team team saw five of their wrestlers make it to the bronze medal match: Chris Waltner, Gary Lynch, Tyler Ashurst, Brody Evans and Cesar Fleurant. Waltner was the lone Wolf to make the podium with a bronze medal finish (photo right).
Coach Francis Clayton:
“Waltner wrestled very very well; he had two matches come down to the wire. the first he lost and the second he won. Dana Campbell wrestled well. Emma Horner lost to the CIS top ranked wrestler in the 59kg in a very close 3-1 match. Overall we did very well today.”
