‘Wolves Lose 3-1 to Badgers

Hugh Mullally | Volleyball (W)

The women’s volleyball team took a 3-1 loss to the Brock Badgers on Saturday afternoon (26-24, 17-25, 21-25, 10-25).

Despite what coach Chris Green described as a solid week in practice, his starting lineup was anything but on-point when Saturday’s match began.

As usual there were flashes of greatness throughout the match, but overall a lack of execution as a team down the stretch. In set 1 Lakehead held a 24-21 lead only to have Brock crawl back into it and force extra points.

“All week we trained hard with high energy and a strong performance day in and day out. Then the uniforms come on and there seems to be a level of tightness that takes over this group,” explained Green.

“Can’t explain it but I know we have to find out what it is and find it fast. Brock played exactly the way we anticipated, however it was about us playing way below our team and personal standards.”

J_Korchak_attack_HammertKailan Robinson was Lakehead’s leader in kills with 9 and a service ace for 10 points.

Over the four sets Lakehead committed 10 service errors and 7 reception errors, further complicating their efforts to battle back against the Badgers.

One bright spot for Lakehead was local athlete Jessica Korchak (photo left), who had one of her best games at the net, making 4 blocks and adding 3 kills to her stat line.

Brock put forth a balanced attack, led by Kelsi Boroevich and Maddie Brown with 8 points each.

“This team has many young girls either playing for the first time or starting for the first time, and they will have to  figure out what performance is and what responding is all about,” continued Green. “Today’s result is not the standard we expect, and not the standard we demand. Now they have to chew on this one for a while before they can get back on the court to make amends.”

“We may have a bad taste in our mouths now, but Brock will be better tomorrow. We need to meet the challenge head-on.”

The two teams will rematch tomorrow at 2pm in the Thunderdome. Webcast available via OUA.TV.
