Men’s basketball squad comes up short in Friday night matchup

Lakehead’s men’s basketball team lost the first game of their weekend double-header 77-71. Lakehead moves to 3-12, and 1-6 on the road.

“It was a disappointing result tonight for our squad,” Thunderwolves head coach Ryan Thomson said. “McMaster played well, but we really hurt ourselves defensively with some mistakes when it came to execution.”

Lakehead finished the first quarter in a one-point deficit, and McMaster carried a 34-31 lead into the half, but the Thunderwolves roared back in the third, winning the frame by 12 points, and leading 57-48 going into the fourth. The Marauders, however, took control of the game in the last period, out-scoring Lakehead 29-14.

“Offensively, when Mac turned up the pressure late, our immaturity showed,” Thomson said. “We have to do a better job of executing and attacking the rim under control.”

The Thunderwolves were led by Lock Lam’s 14 points, 11 rebounds, and 7 blocks. Nick Burke added 12 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals in 29 minutes. Davarius Wright and Isaiah Traylor combined for 23 points and 14 rebounds.

McMaster was led by Connor Gilmore’s 25 points and 17 rebounds, including 9 points in the fourth quarter.

“They sped us up,” Thomson said of the final quarter, “and we didn’t take control.”

Lakehead has a chance at revenge tomorrow, as the two squads will face off in the final basketball game of the weekend.
