Thunderwolves track team completes strong showing at St. Scholastica Opener

| News, Track & Field

Lakehead’s track and field team competed at the St. Scholastica Opener in Duluth, Minnesota this weekend.

“We had great results early on,” Thunderwolves assistant coach Joe McDonough said.

Braedon Prochnicki placed first in the men’s 60m race with a time of 7.01 seconds, breaking the record for a Lakehead sprinter by 0.16 seconds. Janet Chukwu equaled her all-time best mark of 8.14 seconds in the 60m, finishing 8th. Prochnicki also finished 2nd in the 200m race with a time of 22.41 seconds, while Chukwu finished the longer race with a time of 26.98.

Thunderwolf Abby Fountaine also had a competitive weekend, finishing the 60m with a time of 8.93 seconds, and the 200m with a time of 28.95 seconds.

“It’s still very early in the USPORTS season,” McDonough said, “so a lot of our squad is still fine-tuning and crushing big training blocks—the fact that they came out and achieved both personal and season bests is a sign of big things to come.”

The Thunderwolves women’s relay team also won the 4x400m event with a time of 4:02, led by Tia Lampo. Lampo also won her heat in the individual 600m with a time of 1:41, finishing 5th overall.

“I was really impressed with Braedan’s race, he was composed, confident and went out there and got the job done, shattering the previous Lakehead record. Both Janet and Tia competed well today and have shown glimpses of their potential so far this year, I expect as the year goes on for their results to be improving as well!”
