Lakehead’s wrestling team had a successful road trip this weekend, winning the Ontario Junior Men’s Wrestling team title on Saturday, and coming second in the men and women combined category. The team also competed at the Western Open on Sunday.
On Saturday, Ashley Gravelle and Erin Clayton collected third-place finishes in the women’s 68 and 65 kilogram classes, and Maggie MacGillivray placed fourth in the women’s 62kg group. In the men’s categories, Myles Bellegrade finished first among heavyweights, John Campbell placed second in 97kg, and Sam Lockie and Hasan Ercan both picked up third-place finishes in the 61 and 57 kilogram classes, respectively. Alex Richer was withdrawn due to injury.
“Even with the good results, which are good to see, there is room for improvement,” Thunderwolves coach Francis Clayton said. “Especially in these final matches before the OUA championships.”
Sunday’s competition saw three Thunderwolves athletes participating, and John Campbell place 3rd with a decision win, a tech fall, and a win-by-forfeit in the men’s 100kg category.
The OUA championships will be held on February 1st and 2nd at the University of Guelph.
