Lakehead Wrestling is pleased to announce that Pickering High School Graduate, multiple National age-group and OFSAA medalist, Mateo Anisi will be attending Lakehead University this fall.
Mateo’s High School and Club Coach Stan Tzogas, describes Mateo as a “very hard working, focused and dedicated wrestler that will make an immediate impact.”
Coach Francis Clayton agrees, “I have been watching Mateo wrestle since the Beat the Streets Wrestling Camp leading up to the 2017 Canada Summer Games. Mateo was a real competitor, from a strong club and a very supportive family. From the first time I met Mateo I thought he would be a good fit with our program.”
“Choosing a University proved to be more challenging than I had expected, as there are so many great Universities in Ontario and across Canada.” said Mateo. “Lakehead’s outstanding academic success rate, smaller classrooms with family community feel, along with exceptional student support had a major influence in my decision. “
Mateo wasn’t able to visit the University due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however he said “Lakehead University did an amazing job with forthcoming and constant communication, virtual tour and webinar meetings to make the decision-making process easier for me.”
“One of the key decision factors was also the wrestling program at Lakehead University. Coach Clayton and the rest of the coaching staff at Lakehead have a proven track record for developing some of the best wrestlers in Canada.” said Mateo.
“I have always felt a special chemistry and sense of belonging with every interaction I had with Lakehead’s wrestling coaching staff. The Lakehead wrestling room is stacked with top talented athletes and I can’t wait to join the team.”
Coach Clayton looks forward to Mateo adding depth to the middle weight classes. “He will be training with Marco Palermo, Mike Zale, Jesse Leach, Aiden Evenson, Ben Bigelow, Alex Richer, and Abe Mfonpa’re Ntienjem to name a few. They will all be good for each other, pushing each other to get better. I am looking forward to it, and I think they are as well.”
Mateo joins 4 other recruits that will be starting with the Thunderwolves this fall, including Amelia Cox, Ashlyn Sweitzer, Adam Lafroy, and Chase Birch.
