The Lakehead University Thunderwolves Cross Country team competed at the Roy Griak Invitational yesterday in their first competition of the 2017 season.

It was the first race as a Thunderwolf for the majority of the team, but the runners also faced 40 degree weather with humidity that made it extremely challenging. The organizers decided that they would combined races and moved races earlier to avoid the worst of the heat but Coach Sigsworth explained that the heat was still very intense and that runners were dropping all over the course.

“I was very happy with how the athletes handled themselves. Not only were the conditions very tough but for almost all of our athletes that competed, it was their first ever university cross country race. The process was good, we just need more race experience and training volume – both of which will come as this group of runners matures.”  – Coach Kip Sigsworth

Running at the Les Bolstad Golf Course at the University of Minnesota, the women started the day running 6km in the Women’s Maroon (Division III). Rebekkah Pyle had a great first race as a Thunderwolf, placing 13th overall at 24:44. Paige Kobe was not far behind coming in at 25:05.

The men ran 8km in the Maroon men’s Division II with Derek Patterson leading the Thunderwolves with a time of 27.30.

The Thunderwolves next race is September 29th at the UWEC BluGold Open.
