ActiveU Leader-in-Training Program

About our Program

ActiveU has always been a program dedicated to healthy child development through sport and physical activity. Now, we want to continue promoting that development through providing an opportunity for youth in the community to gain certifications and leadership skills! Registering for our Leader in Training (L.I.T) program will ensure that youth are well equipped in supporting that same healthy development!

L.I.T Camp is a new two week program intended for students that are entering Grade 9 or Grade 10 starting in September 2023. The programming consists of certifications through the Lifesaving Society, Leadership Training, and a placement opportunity in one of our ActiveU Camps!

During week one, participants will have the opportunity to gain both their Bronze Medallion and Emergency First Aid certifications with qualified instructors provided by Learn to Swim – Thunder Bay, one of our ActiveU Partners. Also during week one, participants will learn different leadership skills, instructed by our ActiveU Leadership Team. Week two will consist of group placement with an ActiveU camper group, as well as additional leadership sessions. At the end of the session, L.I.T’s will walk away with 40 volunteer hours in addition to their completed certifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old does my child have to be to participate in the L.I.T program?

  • Your child must be entering Grade 9 or Grade 10 in September 2023 to sign up for Summer 2023

Can my child do both the July and August session of the L.I.T program?

  • Yes, however they will be expected to fully participate in the instructional portion of bronze medallion and emergency first aid, even if they already have their certification.

My child isn’t sure they are a strong enough swimmer to complete their Bronze Medallion, can they still sign up?

  • Modified instruction will be provided for swimmers not yet at the level needed to complete Bronze Medallion. Learn to Swim – Thunder Bay will work with these participants to build up their lifesaving skills and assess if an alternative certification, such as Safeguard or Junior Lifeguard Certification, can be worked towards. ActiveU will also work with potential L.I.T’s to set up an optional swim assessment prior to camp to assist with alternative certification options.

My child already has their bronze medallion and EFA, can they still sign up?

  • Yes, L.I.T candidates who already have the associated certifications are still welcome to sign up for our program, but will be expected to join the rest of their L.I.T cohort during instructional time and participate fully.

Is my child eligible to apply to be an ActiveU staff member after completion of this program?

  • Yes! We will contact all L.I.T program graduates anytime we are completing ActiveU hiring. ActiveU staff must be a minimum of 16 years old. L.I.T graduates will be giving advance notice of all hiring periods and first preference for interview time slots.

Is my child eligible to work as a lifeguard or swim instructor after completing this course?

  • Almost – but a few more certifications would be needed! We encourage your child to continue their certification journey with Learn to Swim by obtaining their Bronze Cross, National Lifeguard – Pool, and Standard First Aid certifications, which will enhance their employment prospects. It is important to note that applicants must meet the minimum age requirement of 16 years to become a Lifeguard. All L.I.T graduates will receive advance notice of all hiring periods and certification opportunities, and will be given first preference for interview time slots.
