With Lakehead’s bats awakened and confidence growing on defense, game 2 of the day was a smoother affair. Starter James Shaw threw a complete game on 130 pitches with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks.
The ‘Wolves scored in bunches, with 4 runs in each of the 3rd, 4th and 7th innings to seal the win over a Gophers team that seemed to have been decoded by the ‘Wolves.
Josh Kennedy went 3-for-5 with 6 rbi’s, which included a 3-run bomb in the 7th that gave Lakehead a cushion to coast to victory.
Shaw did give up a solo homer in the final inning, but would get 2 other Gophers to fly out to end the threat and finish the game.
“It feels great to get these conference wins under our belt,” said coach Jason Hart. “We’ve had a rough go up to this point, but to reach pay dirt with a couple of wins is very rewarding for this young group of athletes.”
