Kevin Tree retained his Queen’s Open title, placing first for the second year in a row, and led his team to a 3rd place finish (out of 11) on Saturday. The women’s team placed 5th out of nine teams.
“As a team the men ran much better today than they have up to this point,” said coach Kip Sigsworth. “Tree was great and ran a patient race, taking the lead on the last lap and hanging on for the win.”
Referring to Dominique Aulagnon, Mason Quarell and Trevor Zimak, Sigsworth noted, “Our 2, 3, and 4 runners really stepped up today, especially Mason. It was a huge step in the right direction.”
Placing 5th for the ‘Wolves and 34th overall was Gavin Shields.
The women’s team was led by Callie Roelfsema and Marla Keyes, placing 16th and 19th, respectively. Kayla Gallo, Natasha Frank and Heather Maxfield placed 36, 37 and 39 overall.
“The women ran okay,” summarized Sigsworth. “Not the best race of the season but they know what they need to do in order to run well at OUA’s in two weeks.”
In terms of team placements, McMaster won the men’s 8km race, and Queen’s won the women’s 6km run. Lakehead was just 7 points (69) back of finishing 2nd, but was edged out by the host Queen’s Gaels (62).
