Thunderwolves Cross Country Running and Indoor Track Coach Resigns

Lakehead Thunderwolves Varsity Cross Country Running and Indoor Track Coach, Kip Sigsworth, announced that he is resigning from his position as head coach after 16 years in the position.

Kip was not only a long time coach of the team, but also an athlete from 1993 to 1997. During this time he was a 2 time OUA medalist in the 600m, and he still holds the school record for the mens’ 600m.

As a coach, he had accomplishments over his years including being named the 2012 OUA Men’s XC Coach of the Year, and the 2016 Team Canada Head Coach for the World University XC Championships. In his time here, he has coached 4 USport All-Canadians, 8 OUA All-Stars, 2 USport Medalists, and 5 OUA Medalists. He has also coached national champions at the U16, U18, and U20 levels, and 2nd place finisher in the Canadian Olympic Trials. The Lakehead Men’s XC team qualified for the USports XC Nationals four consecutive years, from 2012 to 2015.

“It has been an honour to serve as the Lakehead University Cross Country Running and Indoor Track Coach the last 16 years.  I have had so many great experiences and have had the privilege of working with countless amazing individuals during this time.  I will miss being at practice and interacting with student-athletes on a daily basis but it is time to move on and explore other opportunities.” says Sigsworth.

He continues on to say “I want to thank Lakehead University Director of Athletics Tom Warden for giving me this opportunity and for all his support and friendship during my time here.  I also want to thank all the coaches I have worked with over the years for their help, passion, and camaraderie.  Finally, I am indebted to all of the student-athletes who have been a part of the program over the last 16 years.  Your dedication, willingness to strive to be better, and hard work have made this an amazing experience for me.”

“I wish everyone associated with Lakehead Athletics; the student-athletes, coaches, and support staff, all the best moving forward.  I will forever be grateful for my time here and will be cheering for all of you.” he concludes.

Tom Warden, Athletics Director, says that “I wish Kip the best of luck with his choice to move on, and I’d like to sincerely thank Kip for his years of service to Lakehead University, the department of Athletics, and the cross country and track and field programs”.

The Athletics Department will continue to provide quality track and field and cross country programming and opportunities for our athletes and the community.
